Driven by government legislation, electrical utilities and transformer manufacturers are now looking for innovative ways to increase transformer efficiencies.
Compared with conventional transformer cores, amorphous metal distribution transformer cores (AMDTs) can achieve a reduction of approximately 70% in no-load loss.
Metglas™ amorphous metal, is only 0.001” thick and is therefore used predominantly in distributed gap, wound core applications, in transformers where an ultra low no- load loss is required. […]
Distributed Gap Wound Cores
Distributed gap wound cores – also known as DG Cores – are popular in the distribution transformer industry, especially in single phase units where transformer no-load losses close to the intrinsic loss of the steel are possible.
They offer excellent performance with the added benefit of a very simple champing structure and assembly process, often utilizing 75% fewer components than an equivalent stacked core. Therefore, the time taken to assemble a core is dramatically reduced. […]
Flat Stacked Sheet Products
With the capability to produce cores ranging from standard butt cut stacks to scrapless mitre and step lap cores, Cogent can supply flat stack cores for most transformer applications.
In addition to supplying flat stack products in the full range of conventional GO and Hi-B steels, Cogent offers client support at the application and design level, thus enabling the best value solution to be highlighted.
Combined with Cogent’s diverse steel products and in-depth power transformer application and design, […]
Fully Assembled Step-Lap Cores
In addition to supplying step-lap cores in conventional, “log” form, Cogent supplies fully assembled step-lap cores, complete with custom clamp structure and associated insulation kits. Clamps can be supplied in channel, box, flat plate, or custom-designed. Fully assembled units can also be supplied with vertical tie rods or tie bars. Insulation systems can be made with cellulose based or dry-type configurations.

Toroidal Core Products
Cogent offer the complete spectrum in toroidal core products in bare or coated form, as well as in round or rectangular shapes. We can produce products that constitute a full range of electrical steels, ranging in weight from several ounces to well above 100lbs. That’s why clients across the continent come to us – for our manufacturing quality, product range, and client follow-up. If it’s top-grade, value-added toroidal cores that you need, that’s what we supply. As a result, Cogent is one of the largest producers of toroidal cores in North America. […]
Cogent produces and supplies a range of special components for the North American and global transformer industry. Typically produced parts are identified in the list below. Cogent works closely with clients in all applications requiring electrical steels and magnetic materials for unique and customized applications.
Magnetic steel and tank liners (shield) for large power transformers that are custom-made to individual design requirements. These shields reduce tank stray losses and eliminate tank hot spots by introducing a relatively high permeability shunt path that carries stray flux. […]
Cogent manufactures world-leading fully processed grain- oriented and non-grain-oriented electrical steels, both of which exhibit high magnetic permeability and low iron core losses.
Specializing in electrical steels has allowed Cogent to make the necessary investments in industry leading process equipment. Cogent’s slitting capabilities surpass the most rigid industry standards for slit steel. Coupled with tailored handling equipment, Cogent sets the benchmark on how electrical steel is to be processed – without harming its unique and fragile properties. […]
